What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese health care system that can be traced back for at least 2,500 years. The general theory of acupuncture is there are specific patterns of energy flow through the body that are essential for health. The Chinese call this energy Qi (chee), and it is the balancing of Qi that promotes health. Acupuncture is most commonly known for the use of small, sterile needles being inserted into specific locations in the skin. It also uses a variety of other treatment modalities, including acupressure, electro-acupuncture, Chinese herbs, nutrition counseling, magnets, cupping, and moxibustion.

Free Acupuncture for UM Med Students!

What is one of the best ways to learn something? By experiencing it, of course. As a medical student, you will one day be a doctor. Chances are you will have patients who get acupuncture as part of their health care or you may want to offer it as part of your treatment process. We offer a FREE acupuncture treatment to each UM medical student. During the treatment experience, students are encouraged to ask questions. This allows you to have first-hand knowledge of what a treatment is like and to interact with a licensed, trained acupuncturist. Special clinic hours are devoted to the medical students, and an open door policy operates throughout the entire academic year. So come in and experience acupuncture...FREE!
